The Tri-Stand has been specifically developed to provide a lightweight, portable support for the 3.5" Questar and similar instruments. The unique adjustable head provides fine adjustments in both rotation and elevation for precise polar alignment from 90 to 26 degrees latitude while keeping the telescope balanced over the stand at all times. Model 19337 allows alignment from 60 to 0 degrees latitude.
UNPACKING AND ASSEMBLY
The Tri-Stand comes boxed with the legs stored in the upright position along the main column. Lift the unit from the packaging using the carrying handle and set it on the floor, resting on the shelf. Loosen one of the leg lock levers approximately 3 turns. This will allow the leg to be pulled away from the leg hub and rotated to the down position. Align the leg until the slot and key align and tighten the lock lever. (The lever may be repositioned by pulling straight out on the lever and turning it to the desired position). Repeat this procedure for the other two legs. The tilt head assembly may be removed if desired, by simply loosening the three lock knobs 3-4 turns and pulling the head off. When re-installing and setting up, be sure the head is fully seated on the main column. Rotate it to the desired observing position (usually in line with the accessory shelf) and lock it in place with three lock screws.
ATTACHING THE SCOPE
The head is made to fit the 3.5" Questar and similar instruments with a 1/4-20 tapped mounting hole in the center of the telescope base. First adjust the tilt mechanism to the flat position. This will make attaching the scope easier, especially the first time. Set the scope on the mounting platform with the powerguide or drive plug aligned with the cut out area, and center it on the disc. While holding the scope with one hand, turn the knurled knob clock-wise into the scope until tight.
POLAR ALIGNMENT ADJUSTMENTS
With the scope set on a flat level surface the latitude setting may be set directly using the engraved scale. Azimuth adjustment (80 degrees total movement) should be set to the midpoint position and the stand then positioned pointing approximately north. Refer to your telescope manual for detailed information on polar alignment procedure. For long exposure photography, the star drift method is recommended.
The accessory shelf is attached to the stand for shipping and is usually left on. It provides a convenient rest when setting the stand down in its collapsed configuration.
STORAGE AND TRANSPORATATION
The stand may be stored and transported in the shipping container.
CLEANING AND CARE
The Tri-Stand is made from anodized aluminum with the exception of the stainless steel hardware, nylon feet and accessory shelf. Any detergent based cleaner is suitable, using a soft cloth.
