orion starblast
I originally purchased this as a gift for a 9 yr. old, but after a test run
I kept it for myself!  Views are more
crisp than my Meade ETX 90.  High powers with a barlow nearly factor out the coma inherent in the f/4 design.  Satisfying grab and go.

Amazing scope with the right EPs
With the right eyepieces and a place to put it, this amazing little scope is a definite 10.  Since you have to supply these I give it 9.  Dont let that score discourage you.

I tested the Starblast against a ShortTube 80-type scope and an Orion XT4.5.  It beat the short tube on almost every object and was only bested by the XT when the EPs couldnt get enough magnification or didnt barlow well.  Otherwise it is optically the XT4.5s equal.  And with a focal length of 450mm it can be a real richfield scope whereas the XT cannot.

The scope mount is solid, smooth, and very easy to use.  It goes anywhere and gives good views of many things.  Frankly, I was surprised by the level of engineering in this scope - it is a mini-masterpiece.

So, the challenge is up to you.  Eyepieces to cope with an f/4 mirror and a fl of only 450mm, and a place to put it - thats all you need for an ultra-portable inexpensive super scope.

If you are looking for a telescope for a child - Id consider the XT4.5 if you want to keep costs down; it comes with the right EPs.  On the other hand the Starblast looks more appealing (thats important!) and is lighter - so you have to consider that as well.  Both are great starter scopes.
