TeleVue 26mm Nagler Type 5

Manufacturer : TeleVue
Part Number : EN5-26.0

This is a somewhat smaller, lighter and more powerful version of the celebrated 31 Nagler Type 5.

This is a somewhat smaller, lighter and more powerful version of the celebrated 31 Nagler Type 5. Why? Because customers such as Tom Dietz, from the Smithsonian, are pests! :-) It weighs about 1.6 lbs and has a field stop diameter of 35mm. It is parfocal with the 17mm Nagler Type 4, making it a nice match in size, weight and convenience.

Why Are There 3 Types of Naglers?

To achieve the full magnification range over 82° apparent field of view requires two types: Nagler Type-5 with focal lengths of 31, 26, 20, 16mm and Nagler Type-6 with focal lengths of 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, 3.5, 2.5mm.

The Type-5 permits the largest true field possible (31mm has 42mm field stop), while the shorter focal length Type-6 models are parfocal, with similiar size and weight and all with a comfortable 12mm eye relief.

The Type-4 models feature about 18mm of eye relief and with the "instajust" eyeguard are best for eyeglass wearers or Dioptrx users in their 22, 17, 12mm focal length range.

Beyond Awesome Eyepiece
Eight years ago I bought an F5 20 Obsession, but ran out of money for commensurate eyepieces.  Finally Christmas came.  The difference in visual impact is nearly as great as going from a small reflecter to the huge Dob in the first place.  Images are tremendously more detailed, much brighter/contrasty, are tack sharp across the entire field of view and the larger FOV means more observing and less moving.  M81 & M82 fit easily in the same field of view with HUGE detail.  Itll take forever to navigate the Virgo galaxy field because even the dim 1-star rated galaxies are fairly obvious and some of the 3-stars are as good as the 5-star items used to be (The Night Sky Observers Guide).  The classic prominent spiral arm galaxies like M101 and M51 are pure eye candy--no averted vision to drink them in (rural northern NH observing site, mag 5 to 5.5 sky).  Even dim globulars like NGC 5897 in Libra (3-star) are WELL worth the effort and you wont believe M13.  Finally Ive used this eyepiece very successfully with both glasses and contact lenses (my preference).  Because I am very near-sighted I cannon quite get the eyepiece to focus unless I wear corrective lenses.  Overall I am completely pleased.

This eyepiece is very bright and sharp almost all the way to the edge on my F/7 APO refractor. The golden color ring on the outter most edge of the field is definitely there when the eyepiece is used during the day. However, the main function of this eyepiece is for DSO and it performs very well. Highly recommended

fast dobs best friend
I just purchased this EP to use with my 15 f/5 and 8 f/6 dob.  It replaced my 35mm Panoptic as my lower power EP.  Why?  The 35mm Pan produces 7mm exit pupil in my 15 f/5 dob and almost 6mm in my 8 f/6.  My dark adapted eyes are never 7mm!  I must be throwing some photons away; somthing about the view with the 35mm Pan in my 15 scope has never been quite right for me. The 26mm produces 5.2mm exit pupil in the 15 and 4.4mm in the 8, nearly ideal sizes.

Side by side comparison in the 15 dob showed me that I made the right decision.  Objects appear brighter, sharper, and has more contrast in the 26mm.  The stars are flat across 98% of the FOV in my f/5 scope. (Who looks at the very edge anyway?)  The Veil Nebula in the 15 with the 26mm with a 2 UltraBlock was truly a thing of beauty.  That alone made it worth owning this EP.  Now I have to get a 2 O-III filter too!

In my opinion this is the ultimate eyepiece for large aperture, short focal lenght dobs.  At $490, it is expensive.  However, I quickly forgot about that once I looked thru it with my 15 dob.

Another great Piece to your puzzle
I own a number of wonderful TV eyepieces, most are a wide range of naglers and the mid range TV panoptics but I was in need a solid eyepiece with just a little more power then my  31 nagler provides...That isnt to say this is a piece to replace the 31, but the best decision you can make when you need that extra magnification...It complements the 31 extremly well and between these 2, your visual quality only gets better...The 26mm T5 nagler will give you exceptional detail and optics, another great piece to your puzzle! Magnificent Eyepiece!
In my opinion, the Nagler 26mm Type 5 is a better overall choice than the new Nagler 31mm Type 5. The image is brighter with an exit pupil of 5.8mm (closer to most peoples maximum dilated pupil) versus the 31mms light wasting 6.9mm. The eyepiece is razor sharp with great contrast. I own several high end eyepieces and rate it as the best eyepiece I have used with several different telescopes. You will love this eyepiece!

Coupled with a 10-LX200GPS and an Everbrite Diagonal this is an excellent purchase.
