TeleVue 13mm ETHOS Eyepiece

Manufacturer : TeleVue
Part Number : ETH-13.0

We have not specifically endorsed the 13mm Ethos for Bino-Vue use because of the large diameter barrel. Even so, we were advised by Mike Harvey at the Winter Star Party (February 2008) that only 1-person in 25 had interpupilary limits with the bino'd Ethos (63.5-mm for the initial production 13mm).

However, since many of our customers have been thrilled with the experience, we have maximized the potential use by narrowing the barrel from 63.5-mm to 62-mm diameter for eyepieces delivered beginning mid-March 2008. While the difference is only 1.5-mm, (or 0.75-mm for pairing a first production unit with current production) we decided to make this small change public, in case you want to give it a try.

One of the best
What can I say that has not been said? One heck of an eyepiece. I took this baby down to the Everglades the other night and I felt like jumping into the eyepiece. The sky was so black, the stars so sharp, the FOV, endless. M42 was breathtaking, my best view ever!!! Cant wait to get another one to attempt binoviewing with them.

13mm Ethos eyepiece - superb
My new 13mm and 8mm Ethos eyepieces were a Big Hit at our clubs last public star party (I used them with my new TV-85 and PortaMount). I had to wrestle them away from other astronomers who wanted to borrow them to look through.

Wows and Thats beautiful pierced the nighttime air. The cost of the Ethos bewildered several - but, to a man they loved them. Me, too.

Cant wait to get my new 6mm Ethos (in February?). I decided to wait to pre-order the 17mm...(dont need it with the TV-85 and my current Nagler eyepieces)

13mm Ethos
An amazing eyepiece.

The views are most probably best for a large aperture short aperture newtonian as my refractor struggles to balance with this behemoth.

The image quality is astounding, better than type 6 Naglers.

Amazing 100 deg view
Stunning, amazing pinpoint stars to edge and incredible contrast.  I just received the 8mm Ethos for good reason.  Must have EP(s) even at the price.  Works well with all my scopes but with medium to large refractors you will not believe till you see for yourself.  What FL is next?  Cant wait.

The Ethos lives up to the hype.
I was skeptical at first.  But all I can say is that the Ethos is truly everything it has been cracked up to be.  Theres a million technical reviews available on this EP, so I wont go ahead and do that here.
But, in a nutshell, this EP has performed wonderfully in everything Ive tried it in: 80mm and 110mm APOs, an 8 SCT, and my 12 reflector.  If you havent had a chance to take a peek through one yet, then youre missing out.  It really is all that, a bag of chips, AND a pickle !

ETHOS worth every dollar
After waiting for some clear weather here in the Pacific NW, I finally got to use my ETHOS eyepiece on my 12 SCT last nite looking at Mars and since the moon was about 50%, the moon also. Utterly fantastic! I think this is the only eyepiece that I have thats lived up to its advertisements. The moons craters and mountains were crisp and clear. I cant wait to try it on my TMB 105 (that is when the next clear nite is here...probably July 29th). Kudos to Tele Vue on this one!

a spaceship in your hand!
This eyepiece is incredible! I now have two for my binoviewing with the Kennedy 15 f6 I have. The Moon is just stunning to see and the contrast is so pleasing to the eye. I dont need filters as the brightness seems to even out and the sharpness of the atmosphere is all that needs to cooperate. When it stills to transparent, it seems like I am flying over the craters in a 747. AMAZING! The experience is soulfully felt as the comfort and sharpness is breath taking! With Ethoss in my binoviewer, a 3X barlow and my 15 inch Kennedy, the views are unbeatable! The only thing better is that it wont be long and I will be using them in my K32! Thanks, Tele Vue! Your eye pieces rule!

Exceptionally well executed
Ive been impressed with the contrast the Ethos delivers. Ive used it the past couple of evenings showing friends the Gibbous Moon. With my TEC 140 the Moon fills about half the apparent FOV yet delivers 75x magnification. Crisp does not begin to describe the view. Several non-astronomers marveled at being able to see faint stars in the black velvety skies adjacent to the lunar limb. Naturally with such a bright target, the observers pupils are not dark adapted, however looking around the vast 100 degree field quickly becomes second nature. On dim fields with fully dark adapted vision, small eye movements require no compensating movements to maintain view of the full field. I subtract 1 point only for the price of the eyepiece.

Ethos first impressions
This eyepiece is truly in a league of its own.  Using an 18-inch f/4.4 the images are very high contrast and fairly sharp across the entire field of view.  With a paracorr stars are nearly pinpoints to the edge.  This is a truly remarkable achievement.  The impact of this huge field of view has to be experienced to fully appreciated.  Eye relief is a little tight but I can still see the whole field with my glasses on.  I suspect that this will soon be the must have eyepiece for die hard observers.
