During the winter months, when the moon is bright in the night sky, it is sometimes possible to see lunar coronae, or diffracted moon light within the upper atmosphere. As light from the sun reflects off the moon and in a thin layer of clouds, photons will scatter from small water droplets (or even ice crystals) to produce concentric colored rings with a bright aureole (or center) which the moon is in.

This image was taken five days before the full moon in February 2011, when the moon was only 78% illuminated. This High-Dynamic Range photo show the inner layers of the corona that are visible to the naked eye as well as some of the outer layers which are only visible with the help of a digital camera (or other observing device).
